A bill to end 鈥渓ast-in, first-out鈥� layoff policies in Georgia has passed both chambers of the legislature and is on its way to Gov. Nathan Deal for signature.
The bill, SB 184, prohibits local boards of education from using seniority as the 鈥減rimary or sole鈥� determining factor when implementing a reduction in force. Boards that don鈥檛 comply can have some of their state education funds withheld.
Georgia鈥檚 action follows that of Utah, where was recently signed into law. Other states that have recently ended LIFO through legislation include Oklahoma, Colorado, and Arizona, in addition to the District of Columbia through its recent teachers鈥� contract.
Former D.C. Chancellor Michelle Rhee鈥檚 advocacy organization apparently played a role in getting this bill through, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution .
