This year, the Technology Counts data section shifts its focus from a state to a district lens, offering a host of charts showing how local schools and districts are using standard and emerging technologies to improve education.

For more than a decade, Technology Counts has examined educational technology by tracking state-level data and issuing report cards on state policies and practices. But because of a shortage of state-level data in the field, and a realization that the real action in educational technology is happening at the school and district levels, the 2010 report is not publishing state data or issuing state report cards.

Instead, it spotlights school- and district-level data on some very interesting trends, including the growth of online curricula, opportunities for online coursetaking, the use of multimedia digital content, online assessments, and school policies on cellphones, iPods, wikis and blogs, and various forms of social media, as well as several other measures of how schools and districts are using technology to improve teaching and learning. —The Editors
